Genetic Consequences of the Transatlantic Slave Trade in the Americas

Quote
According to historical records of transatlantic slavery, traders forcibly deported an estimated 12.5 million people from ports along the Atlantic coastline of Africa between the 16th and 19th centuries, with global impacts reaching to the present day, more than a century and a half after slavery’s abolition. Such records have fueled a broad understanding of the forced migration from Africa to the Americas yet remain underexplored in concert with genetic data. Here, we analyzed genotype array data from 50,281 research participants, which—combined with historical shipping documents—illustrate that the current genetic landscape of the Americas is largely concordant with expectations derived from documentation of slave voyages. For instance, genetic connections between people in slave trading regions of Africa and disembarkation regions of the Americas generally mirror the proportion of individuals forcibly moved between those regions.

While some discordances can be explained by additional records of deportations within the Americas, other discordances yield insights into variable survival rates and timing of arrival of enslaved people from specific regions of Africa. Furthermore, the greater contribution of African women to the gene pool compared to African men varies across the Americas, consistent with literature documenting regional differences in slavery practices. This investigation of the transatlantic slave trade, which is broad in scope in terms of both datasets and analyses, establishes genetic links between individuals in the Americas and populations across Atlantic Africa, yielding a more comprehensive understanding of the African roots of peoples of the Americas.

The purpose of a newspaper is to inform, entertain, and influence.

Mostly, no.

The purpose is to make money.
To do that you must inform, entertain, and influence.
Duh!

Still not their purpose, Ward. Wrong, again.

Those are their techniques to accomplish their purpose.
Oh, So the  techniques of GM is to manufacture cars to make money?

Yes, among other things. Very good.

This is what distinguishes a for-profit company versus a not-for-profit company.

Ya'know?

https://people.com/politics/barron-trump-wont-be-going-back-to-school-this-fall

It's all well and good for President Trump to demand schools reopen, but his own son's school is not going to heed that directive.

When the coronavirus is too dangerous for the RNC to be held in Jacksonville, then to demand that schools reopen is foolhardy.

When the school committees, city councils, and state governments are meeting over Zoom to discuss reopening schools because it is not safe for them to meet in person, then to demand that schools reopen is foolhardy.

To claim, as the president and others have, that we need to get the kids back to school so that their parents can go back to work  is to point out not how important schools are but to highlight the flaws in our economic system, while preparing to sacrifice the well-being of our children, our teachers, and our school staffs on the altar of the economy.

I have asked repeatedly how many children's and teachers' and staff members'  lives this trade off is worth and have yet to get a single answer from Kid or Ward, who are the proponents of that reopening on this message board.

Just don't mention Dead Kids, or China -- you know, the things kiid doesn't have any valid response to.

Quote
Israel: At least 1,335 students and 691 staff members contracted the coronavirus after Israel reopened its entire school system without restrictions May 17, believing it had beaten the virus. The spike in infections among the youths spread to the general population, according to epidemiological surveys by Israel’s Health Ministry. As of mid-July, 125 schools and 258 kindergartens have been closed because of infections.

Israel a pretty unique case (I believe), in that they controlled the virus and then opened up basically everything fully.  [The May 17 reopening date was political as that was the day the new coalition gov't was announced, and the reopening was designed to show optimism and start the gov't off on a positive/popular note]

China reopened gradually.  Even with schools, first only the senior year of high school and middle school returned in May.  Then only after about 3 weeks of monitoring that and making sure there weren't infections, did they bring in the other classes.

When transmission is low due to effective measures -- lockdowns, business closures, isolation, mask wearing and keeping apart -- then countries can reopen gradually, making sure things are okay before expanding.  China had basically a 2 month lockdown followed by a 2 month gradual reopening.  And now theaters are reopening carefully -- 35% capacity, no eating/drinking.  They're getting set to allow fans at sports matches, again limited capacity.

Israel rushed their reopening and it backfired.
A fair amount of students got the virus and reportedly helped spread it back through the adult population.

In the United States, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics, there were a total of 241,904 child coronavirus cases reported as of July 16, with children representing 8% of all cases. There was a 46% increase in child cases from July 2 to July 16, though mortality remains low, with 24 states reporting no child deaths so far.

1/4 million US kids tested positive.
Meaning 1/4 million kids were sick enough to get tested.
And the Actual Cases should be far higher, since kids are usually asymptomatic.
So we're talking at least a few million American kids were infected.

I think you're right that their situation is uncommon, if not unique. This was the piece on it about 10 days ago that convinced me that reopening the schools even in the places that are doing well in this country could be an invitation to disaster:

I pray that I am wrong.

And we still don't know what percentage of them will have extended or even lifelong issues arising from COVID-19.

But let's go ahead and gamble.

I like his analogy of helping an economy by lifting market metrics like the S&P as being like trying to warm up your house by holding a lighter next to your thermostat.   See,  now it's eighty in here!  Fixed!

There is a great deal of satisfaction in realizing subscribers to the Washington Post and viewers of CNN are, even in a small way, helping Nicholas Sandman become a very rich young man.
Still to come are settlements with ABC, CBS, The Guardian, The Huffington Post, NPR, Slate, The Hill, and Gannett which owns the Cincinnati Enquirer,
