As for my Q, I thought I was the only here that thought it was possible to virtually eliminate the virus from the US.  Or that strict lockdowns and contact tracing was doable in the US.

In principle,  virus elimination is possible in any rich country.   Due to the individualist culture (bordering on cult in some segments of society), I never thought we (USA) would be terribly good at some steps.   Before the anti-science cult was so strong here,  we might have done better.  And with consistent messages from governmental bodies,  appealing to community spirit and compassionate sacrifice,  we would have done better.   Wearing a mask could have been sold as patriotic,  joining a good war against disease,  akin to saving up your cans and scrap metal in WW2.  But no...

The fact that China handled things poorly and deceptively at the very start in January is not a valid argument against the rational steps they did take later.

If a man is careless and stupid with his circular saw,  that doesn't mean we don't agree with his subsequent decision to go to an ER and get his hand sewn up.

Yes, of course. Nothing to see here. Move along.
But you might try reading the entire article.

If only we could live in such a place.....

We do, on the secrecy and lying side.

But after that, they worked to contain it in their country - Trump stopped emulating them before that.

Killing Fauci and hushing it would have been the equivalent.

Rid America of Covid-19?
Simple.
Everyone in America stays away from everyone else in America for 3 weeks.
Virus dies out...all gone.

Re: Equity Hubs, one clever solution for working parents
« Reply #61092 on: December 26, 2020, 08:05:14 PM »

Nine months after the pandemic closed down Stedwick Elementary School, learning in suburban Montgomery County is still all remote. But while most students plug in on laptops from home, some are on campus, working from holiday-decorated classrooms.

They are part of “equity hubs” that bring small groups of children together, so that parents who struggle financially have a safe, supervised place for their children to focus on online learning. The hubs are akin to the “pandemic pods” that more affluent families have created, often hiring tutors or teachers.

“This has been a blessing for us,” said Lindsay Montgomery, a single mother of three who lives in Rockville, Md., and said the program has allowed her to work in the afternoons without bringing her 5-year-old along. It also has helped him keep up in kindergarten, she said....

I like the middle ground this system finds, between live school and stuck at home.

Trump has contributed mightily to the GOP, giving the party a backbone it seemed to have misplaced following the Reagan years. He also has reminded people that conservative ideas work, including tax cuts, a reduction in regulations and constitutional judges.

Add to these significant accomplishments the Trump administration's brokering of four peace deals in the Middle East no one thought possible, much less achievable, and the development of a coronavirus vaccine various "experts" said was not possible by the end of the year.

---

The president has hinted he may run again in four years. If he wins, he and his supporters could enjoy sweet revenge. But should he be a candidate? As much as he has done for the party and the country, should Republicans put all their faith and trust in him?

------

Republicans can continue to embrace Trump's policies while getting behind someone without his baggage. Who might that be? My view of the perfect candidate is Vice President Mike Pence, who has been loyal to the president without the name-calling, while preserving his own personality, dignity, Christian faith and kindness.

Republicans could do a lot worse than Pence, but not much bette

Have to admit - Pence has grown on me

Have to see who the other primary runners are

---In late December 2020, U.S. Rep Ilhan Omar criticized federal politicians including Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez for getting a COVID-19 vaccine before most Americans.---
