Deep down, Americans really love their government. It usually takes it’s removal by monstrous right wing assholes to remind them. Bushies did it with Katrina and the Mortgage scam collapse. Trump is ringing even a deeper chord with his shutdown. His infantile approach to his responsibilities has closed a major airport at a national media hub. Little boys who cause economic havoc with their tantrums are never re-elected. They can no longer even be protected as their long criminal histories receive a full airing out. Their ill will and bad character is contagious. Republicans know it’s coming time to attack or run away.

It was a better time for the Klan and the Bund, trump’s core constituencies. It’s no surprise that his leadership leads directly back to the time before FDR, economically, operationally, culturally, and politically.

The day's triptych:

- The arrest of Trump associate and confidante Roger Stone
- The closings and delays at multiple east coast airports due to the Trump Shutdown
- Washington post/ABC news poll putting Trump's approval rate at 37%

All probably led to today's cave-in.  We'll know a month from now if The Donald is truly cowed.  Probably, the days news won't be any better for him then, either.

POTUS shouldn't have power to shut down govt, without consent of Congress.   Pass a law.  Founders did not create executive powers for the purpose of extortion.  Bring checks and balances back... to a reasonable balance.

100% agree.

In "dumb, drunk, racist, and backward" Australia, at whom the whole world laughs "Who is Prime Minister in Australia this week",...there wouldn't be any of that "the federal govt is shut down" shyte going on.

Her Majesty the Queen, via her Governor-General in Australia, would dissolve the parliament and call a new election.
Upstart politicians soon get smacked down. [When elected they have to swear allegiance to the Monarch].
[tis why bambu-ilk love Australia's Constitutional Monarchy system so much].

https://www.gg.gov.au/governor-generals-role

Governor-General's Role

The office of Governor-General was established by the Constitution of the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901.

The Governor-General is appointed by The Queen on the advice of the Prime Minister. After receiving the commission, the Governor-General takes an Oath of Allegiance and an Oath of Office to The Queen and issues a Proclamation assuming office.

The Governor-General’s appointment is at The Queen’s pleasure, that is, without a term being specified. In practice, however, there is an expectation that appointments will be for around five years, subject on occasion, to some extension.

The executive power of the Commonwealth is vested in the Queen and is exercisable by the Governor-General as the Queen’s representative, and extends to the execution and maintenance of this Constitution, and of the laws of the Commonwealth.

1.The power to appoint a Prime Minister if an election has resulted in a ‘hung parliament’;
2.The power to dismiss a Prime Minister where he or she has lost the confidence of the Parliament;

#####

IMO, American President has too much power.
In the absence of a Governor-General, executive power should rest with the US Congress.

Congress should have the power to dismiss a President where he or she has lost the confidence of the Congress.
