On the issue of creating a better educated and more enlightened society,  while at the same time making some money...

You can make money by opening bookstores at the train stations, and at the Greyhound bus stations, just go to the thrift stores and buy all of their used books and then sell the books at the train and bus stations. And as you make money then reinvest some of your money into inventory to buy more books to sell.

Hire the most beautiful young women to work at your bookstores.

It would work, and we could have a great awakening, and a great enlightenment, and a renaissance if people would start reading, and reading used to be considered a luxury, and the train ride is always better with a good book and snacks.

Salute,

Tony V.

But maybe most of all, they're just unprepared, incompetent, too lazy and or uninterested in actually helping people in need, and really only about holding power for themselves and their special interests.

Thoughts like these are threatening the nation.  But we are quite strong enough to endure you, Kam

Peace.

A US Senator says we "overreacted" to a pandemic that has killed 130,000 Americans and is threatening a 100,000 more as it rages out of control.

What do you think is a more balanced assessment?

Just so we are clear
A 25% undercount doesnt mean you should add 25% to get the correct number
I would not want you to look silly elsewhere when spouting this
example:  160,000 - under counted by 25% (40k) is 120,000
To get to 160 K from 120 K you need to add 40k, which is 33.3% of the 120.

Uh, no.
160,000 under counted by 25% = 200K.
160K over-counted by 25% = 120K

The number of deaths reported is believed to be undercounted, too low a number, and you need to add 25% more to that to get a more accurate higher number.

The issue is you don't have the correct number.  You only have the incorrect undercount figure, so you need to add 25% to get the correct figure.

They thought ignoring it and pushing for reopening was the best way to get Trump re-elected.  That's really it.  That's what it comes down to.

Maybe you're right.  But I'm not sure how ignoring an infectious and potentially deadly virus makes any sense.  And then you add reopenings, meaning more gatherings and human contact, and greater transmission is inevitable.

So they were just hoping to get lucky instead of doing anything constructive?
I still find this hard to fathom.

No, not quite what I am saying.  I don't think they thought they would get lucky and the virus would go away.  I think they just didn't care one way or the other.

Its not hard to understand if, again, you look at every issue from the standpoint of how it effects your reelection chances.  When the pandemic really hit, they had two choices due to the timing of it (as they saw them, not saying this is correct).  Either shut everything down properly to protect Americans and almost surely lose the 2020 election due to the economic fallout because however temporary it is it will probably extend into November.  Or, force a reopening that limits the economic damage a bit and spin COVID deaths/sicknesses as unavoidable and/or China's fault.  The later option was a hail mary, maybe, but it was the only option they thought they had because it was the only option that gave them a shot at 2020.

Trump played "wartime president" on TV because he saw the approval ratings it gave him (at first) but we all know those nightly shows were pointless, or really doing more damage than help.

I think the voter suppression angle has emerged as a plus for them.  It may not have been their original intention but the thinking has definitely emerged that a vote held during a pandemic gives them home field advantage.

Now, we know that the best shot they had at reelection was to handle COVID properly.  Americans supported the shutdowns by large margins.  They gave Trump that wartime approval rating.  If he had played the hero and gotten real results he likely would have kept it.  But getting real results requires knowing what you are doing.  And when it became clear that an Administration staffed by this "president" had no idea what they were doing (I mean, they put fucking Kushner in charge) well, they took the option they had.

No, son

200K - if that is the actually number that should be counted - takes you down to 150, not 160 when 25% under counted

cheers

And you know what proper is?

Americans supported the shutdowns by large margins.  They gave Trump that wartime approval rating.  If he had played the hero and gotten real results

Who says he isnt getting results?

Is he to be held to mistakes made by governors?  When Trump was elected the talk was that he would be a dictator, a tyrant adding rules across the nation.

Now that he allows governors to do states work, the Nicole Wallaces of the world cry that there is no federal mantra on COVID - no DICTATORSHIP over the virus.

Too damn funny.

But getting real results requires knowing what you are doing.

It requires listening to many sides of the issue, then judging the better road.

Biden would admittedly have allowed flights to keep coming from Wuhan.  Is this fatal - that he once said this?  No.  But it stands out.

Joe likely didnt do the proper work before opening his mouth.  He took a political stance to demean an adversary - without thought to possible consequence

Does this mean he will suck as a president?  No.  Of course not.  And we all hope not.

Wow.  Thats the biggest pile of bullshit I've read here.  You are constantly resetting that bar, kiidcarter8.

"lose"

Chase away, more like. Hound out.

But yes, the nation lost the direct service of a patriot.

Who says he isnt getting results?

Been following the news much, kiidcarter8?

Is he to be held to mistakes made by governors?

I've said it before.  Forget the straight lies, misinformation and mismanagement that came from this Administration from the very start in January.  Put that aside for just a second.  If you wanted to argue that the the virus spiraling out of control over the course of March and April was not something that should be put at Trump's feet, make that argument.  You would be very wrong (and a real leader would never look to pass the buck on this) but whatever.  You would be Trumpist.  Not dumb as a rock stupid.

We are in fucking July now, and cases are still spiraling out of control.  You are dumb as a rock if you still want to argue this isn't the fault of the federal response.  Testing is still inadequate.  After four months there has been no federal contact tracing program.  And our "president" worked actively to undermine the #1 procedure to control the virus, wearing a fucking mask.

Trump owns this.  You really going to argue he doesn't?

Forget a rock.  Dumb as dirt.

Reactions like yours threaten the nation far more than thoughts like his.

The refusal to acknowledge truth is rampant through your ends of the political spectra and they infect every level of government.

I watch what Kam described in my town meetings and in my Board of Selectmen. And I watch your denial of it, just as surely.

Nor is it just your ends of the political spectra, just as bigotry runs across the axes, but you and yours have more than your fair share.

Biden would have followed the guidelines that were laid out by the Obama Administration on how to deal with the virus, and very likely would have followed the course followed by just about every other nation with our kind of resources, and the whole nation would look like New York right now; not out of the woods, but with things largely under control.  This is where most countries in Europe are right now.

The US should have been able to do at least as well as Spain or Italy.  Instead we look like Brazil.  That's not on our leadership?  Bullshit.

Black people are closed fist raised chanting "Black power".
White people  are allowed to do the same and chant "White power"...or should be allowed to...equality.

One group already has the power. It chants it to refuse sharing that power. Not the same as the other group who chants in order to gain power.

I'll put in a way that you should be able to grasp.

One group is chanting "Need Beer!" because they have no beer.

The other group controls all of the breweries, yet is chanting, "Need beer!"

Not equals.

See, now?

No, he doesn't. But a good try.
