CDC bends to President Lysol

Hours after President Trump assailed guidelines issued by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for reopening schools, Vice President Mike Pence, appearing with the White House coronavirus task force, announced the agency would issue new recommendations next week, saying they don’t want the guidance to be a reason why schools don’t open.

“Well, the president said today, we just don’t want the guidance to be too tough,” Mr. Pence said. “That’s the reason why next week, the C.D.C. is going to be issuing a new set of tools, five different documents that will be giving even more clarity on the guidance going forward.”

Not only does the President want a PBnJ in every school kid's lunchbox, but Clorox to wash it down.

But maybe most of all, they're just unprepared, incompetent, too lazy and or uninterested in actually helping people in need, and really only about holding power for themselves and their special interests.

Even easier mental arithmetic.  But I was referencing a specific study which had a result of 27% undercount based on excess deaths.  Other research might have different numbers.

Just so we are clear

A 25% undercount doesnt mean you should add 25% to get the correct number

I would not want you to look silly elsewhere when spouting this

example:

160,000 - under counted by 25% (40k) is 120,000

To get to 160 K from 120 K you need to add 40k, which is 33.3% of the 120.

Black people are closed fist raised chanting "Black power".
White people  are allowed to do the same and chant "White power"...or should be allowed to...equality.

In any country where Blacks held whites as slaves in the last 200 years.

I do personally object to cancel culture when it does something like (my daughter passed this along to me) insist that I not shop at Home Depot because its CEO donated a crap-ton of money to Trump's 2020 campaign.  That's just wrong.  The guy can donate his money wherever he wants to.  And he's not going to change his political views, no matter what customers buy or don't buy from him.  If anything, a boycott of Home Depot would only make him more rigid in his ideology and less open to engaging in any reasoned discussion.

On that I have to disagree.  This is an area where it clearly makes sense.

Wealthy business owners like the owner of Home Depot or, say, the owner of Soul Cycle/Equinox use their money to push for favorable treatment of their businesses and personal finances, and the result has been an economy that more and more over the last  forty years has tilted the field toward the already rich and powerful.

As Kam said, one small way people without that kind of power and cash can have their voice heard is through the products they buy, and establishments they frequent.  I invest in companies that employ environmentally sound practices, use products and vendors that are considering how their actions affect the earth.  For example.  And yeah, if I was a Soul Cycle devotee and found out that its owner was hosting a huge fundraiser in the Hamptons for Donald Trump, I'd switch to Flywheel or buy a  Peloton.

It won't be enough to tilt the field back to level, sure.  And of course these guys will still donate money to politicians that give them favorable regulatory treatment.  But I can make sure that it isn't my money they are using to screw over the rest of us.

The key to my post was the word "insist. "   I agree on the personal choice of not buying somewhere, of not giving your money to a business.  I often make purchases with a company's environmental practices in mind.   What I meant was that someone should not be shamed if they buy plywood at Home Depot,  or have it assumed that they are endorsing the owner's views.   My plywood purchase money will also go to families of HD workers, who are one paycheck away from eviction,  and who (in this sparsely populated area) may have no current alternative places to work.   And this illustrates one of the points that the cancel culture critics are making in Harper's:  political issues can be complex and messy,  and a simplistic "you're either with us,  or you're a heartless creep" can miss nuances and motivations.  Another nuance:  everyone around here who has a home products business is pro-Trump,  and I have to patch that hole in my house somehow.

The white nation you pledge to is truly dying.

The United States can finally throw down the he moldy corpse of your white nation, mortally wounded in the civil war but twitching, spouting blood, and polluting wells ever since until it’s present death rattle. The nation will be much freer when we’re no longer carrying the great white corpse around.

Let's get an encyclopedia definition up here...

The act of canceling (American English) or cancelling (British English; see spelling differences), also referred to as cancel culture (a variant on the term "callout culture") describes a form of boycott in which an individual, who has shared a questionable or controversial opinion, or has had behavior in their past that is perceived to be offensive recorded on social media, is "canceled"; they are ostracized and shunned by former friends, followers and supporters alike, leading to declines in any careers and fanbase the individual may have at any given time.  Harper's Magazine published an open letter on 7th July 2020, signed by 150 public figures, setting out arguments against "an intolerance of opposing views, a vogue for public shaming and ostracism, and the tendency to dissolve complex policy issues in a blinding moral certainty."

In short,  you can feel moral certainty.  But you can't then put cleats on and go jogging on others backs waving your banner.   The best antidote to free speech you consider hateful is... more free speech.   We're not a narrow and provincial little colony of Shakers,  we don't need to shun or ban or exile.
And yet, here we are in Elba.

How'd that happen, again?

Cancel culture is where an imposter president leads business leaders to cancel millions more than 20 million jobs and disintegrate the economy through a combination of ugly evil and dumb.

If cancel culture had a different meaning before 2020, that still what it means now.

Let's see if I'm following this...

1.  Thoughts,  freely held, threaten America.

2.  Self-serving behavior in GOP politicians does not threaten America,  nor does GOP catering to special interests and would be oligarchs.   But a citizen pointing out  these lapses in democracy, or at least suggesting they could happen,  that IS a threat.

3. Ignoring the neediest and most vulnerable groups in America is something politicians don't do,  and suggesting that this happens is a threat to America.   Especially if this is suggested in regard to GOP and its policies.   Because any such charges,  made against public officials,  is a result of bad thoughts that threaten America.

You ended with "peace" but it's hard to see your Orwellian condemnation of people's thoughts leading to a peaceful society.

White people  are allowed to do the same and chant "White power"...or should be allowed to...equality.

One group already has the power. It chants it to refuse sharing that power. Not the same as the other group who chants in order to gain power.

I'll put in a way that you should be able to grasp.

One group is chanting "Need Beer!" because they have no beer.

The other group controls all of the breweries, yet is chanting, "Need beer!"

Not equals.

See, now?
