The head of the U.S. Capitol Police will resign effective Jan. 16 following the breach of the Capitol by a pro-Trump mob.

Chief Steven Sund said Thursday that police had planned for a free speech demonstration and did not expect the violent attack. He said it was unlike anything he’d experienced in his 30 years in law enforcement.

But you prepare for the worst.  And should have contingency plans and force enough to handle whatever might occur.  It sure looked like having more security upfront and/or sufficient backup in riot gear would have stopped this.

Instead it was like the police giving water bottles to Proud Boys and waving Kyle Rittenhouse through when he was trying to surrender.  Just move the smallish barricades and take some selfies and let folks walk right into the Capitol.

Sund's resignation should be effective immediately.  Who wants him another week?

Pelosi calls for resignation of Capitol Police Chief.

Better physical security at the Capitol building would be wise. Absolute security.
Electronic, steel doors instead of glass ones, or steel doors with bullet proof glass in them, etc.

Mayor Bowser could have insisted on FULL protection from National Guard, as there was during the BLM protests

And could have (likely she is not so much responsible for this) communicated to DC police to be more at the ready - and more heavily staffed for the day.

Will the press do their diligence?  Jake Tapper did OK today unwinding some of it.  But most others - til we get to 8 PM tonight on FOX, will be more hands off on Bowser and the DC Chief

Ted Cruz could have decided not to label insurrectionists as patriots. Trump could have decided to accept the results of a clean election, not to mention to heed the judgement of all those judges who said he no case for contesting it.

Hawley could have decided to live on this planet, instead of trying to create an alternative neo-nationalist universe from which to try an launch his 2024 campaign.

The GOP Senate could have examined the mountain of evidence against Trump and voted in-line with the US Constitution and found him guilty at his impeachment trial.


Fox News "could have" decided to make sure Hannity and his ilk suspended their support for right-wing conspiracy theorists.


There are a lot of "could have" moments to consider, and so many of them emanate from the "right", which has been decidedly cowed by Trump and abjectly wrong for not standing up for the law during these last 4 years.

You know, yeah, I riled up the horse to bolt but you could've at least locked the gate afterwards.

Quite shift from last night's tepid call for peace, but not for leaving the building.

This attack was by a flag waving noisy rabble...in the light of day, speeches and social media chatter beforehand.
Now the whole world has seen just how easy it is to invade the building and sit in the Speaker's chair etc.
