More of that great trump leadership and organization.
It was announced with great fanfare that Walmart, CVS, Target, Walgreens would set up drive-thru testing in many of their 30K locations.
https://edition.cnn.com/2020/03/31/politics/drive-thru-coronavirus-testing/index.html
With great follow-through, exactly 5 have opened and they all test only health care workers not ordinary people.  That's 3 weeks ago, during a crisis in which time is important.  Unclear if any other such test sites will open.  Likely not.

My guess is these companies realized that having medical personnel in hazmat style medical garb and encouraging those who might be infected to come by is bad for business.  Rather go to the drug store down the road without the scary looking stuff out front.

That and the fact that the Trumpeters lost interest after the announcement and didn't coordinate or keep the momentum up.  It's all reactionary anyway.  They've had trouble getting their heads around prophylaxis, only waiting to respond after outbreaks occur.

That article posits it was mostly a PR exercise to mitigate the damage from when Trump said the week before that anyone who wants to get tested can.  And since that was demonstrably false, they hastily created this gov't-private partnership to make it look like testing would soon be widespread.  And after the PR photo-ops and pats on the back, it was largely forgotten.

Canada has roughly 1/9th the population we do.

They have roughly 1/22nd the cases we do.

They have 1/6th the recovered cases we do.

And they have 1/40th the deaths we do.

They're first reported case was only 4 days later than ours.

China primarily had one month of infectious spread and then 7 weeks with many needing treatment.  And after 8 weeks things were well in hand, with basic precautions remaining in place (masks, temp checks, no large groups allowed).

Of course the measures in China were implemented earlier, stricter and more adhered to than in the US.  All of which makes a big difference.  But there's no reason -- except poor leadership and planning -- that the US couldn't have had a similar or better outcome than China (we knew it was coming, had multiple warnings, time to prepare, and knew what works).

Instead one big Trump Fubar.

I think he actually likes being in the spotlight so much.  Does he ever talk about the people who have died and families who have lost loved ones?

Yeah, but it's no fair.  Canada actually has a unified national health care system and competent normal leadership.

(actually I've noticed I've heard very little about Canada and what measures they've taken and when.  Vancouver is mostly an Asian city, with lots of Chinese, so a natural early entry point, just like SF or LA).

The only thing that jumps out on Canadian statistics is that they report just 120 serious cases out of 7,269 active cases.  Which is just a 2% rate, and should be very manageable for the health care system.
https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/country/canada/

Their new cases had seemed to level off last week, before shooting up the last two days.  I'd be interested to hear what measures they use.  I'd be almost certain that the compliance rate is much better and the enforcement is more uniform.

The moment is much much much bigger than donald trump and the republican party.

Tiny little men with tiny withered world views and vital human organs forgotten from long disuse.

Trump called it “a matter of life and death” for Americans to heed his administration’s guidelines and predicted the country would soon see a “light at the end of the tunnel” in a pandemic that has killed more than 3,500 Americans and infected 170,000 more.

“I want every American to be prepared for the hard days that lie ahead,” Trump said.
“This is going to be one of the roughest two or three weeks we’ve ever had in our country,” Trump added. “We’re going to lose thousands of people.”

You almost expect him to say April's Fools.  It's just a hoax.

So they are finally starting to say and hopefully do the right things on April 1.  Just think how much different things would be if they had this approach on March 1.
How many fewer infections and deaths, a much lessened threat to the health care system, a lesser disruption to lives and the economy.

Quote
“There’s no magic bullet,” Birx said. “There’s no magic vaccine or therapy. It’s just behaviors. Each of our behaviors, translating into something that changes the course of this viral pandemic.”

But we knew that two months ago.  With strong leadership and good precautions, things would have been much different, much better.

The clash was particularly sensitive because of the evolving nature of gender politics in the Trump era. Suburban women, including many Republicans, have increasingly fled Trump’s GOP, enabling major Democratic victories across the country in 2018 and 2019.

His decision to single out Whitmer came the same week he attacked another high-profile Michigan woman, General Motors CEO Mary Barra, whom he jabbed for not working fast enough to help the government produce ventilators.

“Always a mess with Mary B,” Trump tweeted.

So the CEO of GM is Mary B; Dr. Brix is Deb.  I like how informal and inherently demeaning Trump is towards women.  He threw a childish insult nickname out for the Michigan Guv, who he also calls "that lady in Michigan"

Really has trouble with women in power.

Just a horrible person doing a terrible job.

Sure hope somebody on the Left is taking down all of these false, misleading and stupid coronavirus statements Trump has made and making a TV ad out of them.  To be presented in the late Summer of Fall after this crisis has hopefully passed.

Trump has bungled and botched this virus in so many ways (mostly by wasting time, downplaying the risk and having the fed gov't totally unprepared), that he needs to be held accountable for killing Americans and he needs to be removed from office.  The US managed to survive 3 years of Trump, but then along came an emergency and tens of thousands of American won't be so lucky.

Dems need to make sure the election is going to go off without cheating or limits.  Everyone is stuck at home, great time to get everyone registered to vote.  Which in itself is an outmoded concept.  Everyone should be automatically issued a voter ID # when they turn 17.  And they should be able to vote wherever they reside on voting day -- by mail, by computer (they can verify where you are by your IP #) or in person.  Registration should be automatic, voting should be easy and accessible.

The Republican electoral strategy depends on fewer people voting because they know their policies suck for most Americans.

This court ruling may by itself change the outcome of the 2020 presidential election.

Woo-hoo!   Whether or not this changes an election,  it's a great moment for democracy.

On the "100,000 deaths" number, Anthony Fauci:

"We should be prepared for it.  Is it going to be that many? I hope NOT.  The more we push on the mitigation, the LESS LIKELY it will be that number"

Are we pushing more or less now on the mitigation than before?

Reminds of the "we will recycle all" campaigns the plastics industry has every decade since the 70s.   Much fanfare and back-pats,  then most plastic still keeps going to landfills or incinerators in Asia.
