A Tale of Two Cities
« Reply #33525 on: May 07, 2020, 01:45:16 AM »

Another refutation of kiid's shrugging belief that NYC was too dense and crowded to contain the virus:

Quote
In total, Hong Kong has recorded only 15 new cases since April 20, all of which were people with recent travel history. That brings the city's total to 1,041 cases and four deaths. Of those total cases, 900 patients have recovered and been discharged from hospital.

The coronavirus first emerged in mainland China in December, and jumped the border into Hong Kong on January 24. By then, it had already made its way to several other countries.

Hong Kong closed borders and began social distancing just a week or so after recording its first case. But this three-month stretch of working from home, business closures and service suspensions has dealt a massive blow to both the city's economy and the mental health and well-being of residents.
Now, with the second wave mostly contained, many are itching to get back to pre-pandemic life.

HK with only 150 cases by March 1.  Then as China became safer and Europe/US danger zones, many returned to HK and a 2nd wave broke out (700 cases in March), but was also contained by taking strong measures:

Quote
The government took quick, aggressive action to curb the second imported wave; they barred non-residents from entering the city, halted travelers from transiting through the city's airport, and implemented strict quarantine and testing measures on all arrivals to the city, regardless of origin. Those under home quarantine were given electronic bracelets to track their location.

The government implemented restrictions like prohibiting alcohol sales in bars and closing all gyms and sports facilities. Many restaurants and cafes closed

https://edition.cnn.com/2020/05/05/asia/hong-kong-coronavirus-recovery-intl-hnk/index.html

April 19 was the last recorded local transmission in HK.  They're reopening gradually, and aiming for 28 days -- two incubation periods -- of no local transmissions.

HK with a population roughly equal to NYC, probably a higher density, extremely international, a lot of freedom, etc.  Choices were made.  HK took strong timely measures and stopped the virus, despite being fairly close to the main early outbreak in Hubei.  The US and NY went in for delays, half-measures and lots of folks died and were put into misery.

Pretty clear that it was safer and better to be living in HK (or Shanghai) than NYC.  And because NYC/USA botched things so badly, the economy will be hit harder and closed longer, not to even mention the impact due to deaths and medical care.  HK = Success; NYC Failed.

https://www.cnn.com/2020/05/06/us/mcdonalds-employees-shot-coronavirus/index.html

Two McDonald's employees were shot by customers for asking them to leave due to coronavirus restrictions.

Remember way back about 2-3 days ago when I told Ward that the constitutionality isn't the issue - it's willingness to behave rationally.

It's not liberals or progressives pulling these triggers. It's not Biden supporters or CNN watchers.

Just as Trump followers were more likely to drink the Clorox or Lysol, or at least call up the Poison hotlines to check, and Hannity listeners are more likely to die of the virus than  others (like Maddow listeners, for example, so, too, are the conservative nut job members more likely to shoot an employee for doing their job or to wipe their noses on the employee's shirt for being asked to put on a mask.

It's not common, but it is too common.

Stephen Moore, a Heritage Foundation economist who informally advises Trump and other administration officials, said in an interview on Monday that he and fellow conservative economist Art Laffer had already sent their policy memo on opening states to the White House last week. The memo was based on a recent Laffer Associates study that Moore says was conducted over the course of “a couple weeks,” and is now in the hands of senior White House staff.

“Our model shows that if we start the opening of the country , by the end of the summer we could start to see a recovery,” Moore said. “But if we wait until, say, the middle of June, we might have to write off all of 2020. At that point, so much wealth would have evaporated.

Apparently, Hong Kong is a lot less dense than Manhattan, but that's because it is treated like a country on the density lists and not just the urban area. Kowloon would be the 2nd densest city in the world - and at one point, Kowloon Walled City was by far the densest area in the world, ever, until it got torn down (very belatedly).

But Manilla has a population only a little bigger than Manhattan's, but a density that is 67% higher.

Confirmed cases: 5,809; Recovered Cases: 677; Deaths: 392.

First cases, late January. They had 27 on Jan 29.

New York City had 7 on March 7 and 21 on March 8. Manhattan has had 21,470. NYC had more deaths on April 7th, by itself, than Manilla has had altogether, at 574. Manhattan's had 1,822 deaths confirmed plus another 576 probable COVID-19 deaths. More than 4.5 times as many deaths, ignoring the probables.

More time to prepare. Lower density. Higher case load. Substantially higher deaths per million.

NYC did not do a good job. There are places that did far worse, but that doesn't change the comparison.

The hope inside the White House is that Kushner will be able to use his relationships in the private sector to speed up the normally lengthy development process, two sources familiar with Kushner’s involvement say.

It's just stupid, Kid.

I don't think Jared Kushner will screw it up. I don't think he will improve it. It is going to take what it is going to take.

I think his Father-in-Law could screw up our involvement in the work, as he has already done so, to a limited extent, through his choice to skip the international summit working on the vaccines! Not a huge deal, but sure not a positive move!

The Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI) was established for just this sort of thing, in 2017. They are "a global collaboration between public, private, philanthropic and civil society organizations." To the extent that this can be sped up, it is already being sped up, but it must be done carefully because the risk is not just that it is unsafe or doesn't work, but that it exacerbates the problem - creating a stronger strand of the virus, through haste.

Yes, we have human trials, but even if we find one that works in these early batches (which is by no means even likely, let alone certain), we will still have to do longer, broader tests of it.

"According to that nation's leaders, that strategy worked."

And there you are swallowing it whole, without a critical thought in your head.

Let's run these numbers for you, again (all per million):
Sweden - Cases: 2,368; Deaths: 291; Tests: 14,704
Denmark - Cases: 1,716; Deaths: 87; Tests: 46,732
Norway - Cases: 1,475; Deaths:   40; Tests: 34,984
Finland - Cases: 1,006; Deaths:   45; Tests: 19,528
----------------------------------------------------------

I'll ask you again, since you failed to answer the last time. How many millions of jobs is a thousand deaths worth?

Sweden's unemployment rate in mid-April was 8% with an expectation that it would hit 10% by summer. I think they're kidding themselves, given how fast the jump was from 6% in March to 8% in mid-April.

Norway's unemployment rate is 14.7%. Denmark's is lower than Sweden's. Finland's April data isn't where I can see it easily, but it was 6.5% in March --> but their historical average is 9%!

How many deaths is it worth for Sweden to have fewer unemployed people than Norway?!

For HK, I was thinking of the comp between Kowloon and HK Island with NYC.
You can add in adjacent Kowloon suburbs, but if you add in all the "New Territories" and sparsely populated islands then HK's density of course drops.

Anyway, I didn't bother to look up HK's total population or density.  The basic point stands.  Comparable cities fared much better than NYC because they took timely and effective measures.  And if there are comparable cities that did nearly as bad or worse than NY, you can almost guarantee they took late and inadequate actions.

As I've said a few times here, my main takeaway is that it's not that difficult to stop viral transmission, it just takes some planning, coordination, compliance.  And best to get an early start.

I’m assuming San Diego has another 10-20 thousand Covid cases unreported in federal detention centers and baby cage facilities nestled about here and there.
