This Memorial Day, I’m thinking about what images in array or montage accompanying the words, “human stock capital” best convey the ethos of the republican party as it exists today....

People lighting the gasses coming out...

Am so glad that sentence ended with kitchen sink taps!

Have a fine Memorial Day y'all.

Those frontotemporal dementia symptoms... maybe,  but I'd say "loss of empathy" is not one of DT's symptoms.   Don't think he ever had any to lose.

You should really check out the Atlantic article linked to up above.

A safe, circumspect, pleasant Memorial Day, if it’s not too late...

The situation may be a handful or a dozen times better than it could have been as worst case reasonable projection so far in the U.S., but it’s hundreds or thousands of times, because I’m being very generous in my assessment to the federal powers that be, worse than it had to be.

Had those powers been led by someone who listens at all to those who faithfully and professionally adhere to data, who had an early and accurate consensus on the basics of what was going on, things now would be hundreds or thousands or a hundred thousand times better strictly in terms of lives lost to the Virus.

Slap fools. For yourself, for the fool, and for everyone else. If you’re not a fool you should usually have an avenue to accomplish this verbally as speech is still more or less free in this society.

http://www.politico.com/news/2020/05/25/donald-trump-rigged-election-talk-fears-274477

He was always going to claim it was rigged if he lost and refuse to accept it.

Nothing new. Sure, the rhetoric is slightly more pointed now, but only because it's closer and the polls look bad for him.

And the efforts of folks like the RNC who still think that "winning" is what is important don't help.

People lighting the gasses coming out the spouts of their kitchen sinks on fire

There's a place in Azerbaijan where you can light the water on fire as it has so much methane mixed in with it.  Azerbaijan was home to the world's first oil well.  Also has mud volcanoes, burbling piles with methane bubbling up (which you can light on fire).

Western PA can look into its future, unless republicans are defeated like their confederate predecessors.

It's seems odd that the birthplace of the modern oil industry was PA and NJ.
ESSO was Standard Oil (SO) of NJ

Azerbaijan bills itself as The Land of Fire.
There are a couple sites where a hillside has been continuously burning for decades.
For thousands of years, blobs of oil, called naphtha back then, would float to the surface of the Black Sea near Baku.  They think that was what the Romans used, perhaps mixed with quicklime, to make Greek fire proto-flamethrowers used during their sieges, especially useful for setting other ships on fire.  The Nobel brothers were a big part of the early oil industry in Baku.  Unusual for the oil and gas to be so close to the surface.  We didn't stop to see the burning water, but it is quite an oddity.

As a petro-dictatorship -- the president's wife was recently made a VP -- there's a lot of money sloshing around Azerbaijan.  So the country was better organized and more efficient than I expected.   Especially compared to the more ragged democratic Georgia which is fossil fuel-less, and also stuck with a pair of protracted frozen conflicts with Russia.  Which means Russia has de facto annexed two chunks of fairly small Georgia -- Abkhazia and South Ossetia.
