I do personally object to cancel culture when it does something like (my daughter passed this along to me) insist that I not shop at Home Depot because its CEO donated a crap-ton of money to Trump's 2020 campaign.  That's just wrong.  The guy can donate his money wherever he wants to.  And he's not going to change his political views, no matter what customers buy or don't buy from him.  If anything, a boycott of Home Depot would only make him more rigid in his ideology and less open to engaging in any reasoned discussion.

On that I have to disagree.  This is an area where it clearly makes sense.

Wealthy business owners like the owner of Home Depot or, say, the owner of Soul Cycle/Equinox use their money to push for favorable treatment of their businesses and personal finances, and the result has been an economy that more and more over the last  forty years has tilted the field toward the already rich and powerful.

As Kam said, one small way people without that kind of power and cash can have their voice heard is through the products they buy, and establishments they frequent.  I invest in companies that employ environmentally sound practices, use products and vendors that are considering how their actions affect the earth.  For example.  And yeah, if I was a Soul Cycle devotee and found out that its owner was hosting a huge fundraiser in the Hamptons for Donald Trump, I'd switch to Flywheel or buy a  Peloton.

It won't be enough to tilt the field back to level, sure.  And of course these guys will still donate money to politicians that give them favorable regulatory treatment.  But I can make sure that it isn't my money they are using to screw over the rest of us.

The key to my post was the word "insist. "   I agree on the personal choice of not buying somewhere, of not giving your money to a business.  I often make purchases with a company's environmental practices in mind.   What I meant was that someone should not be shamed if they buy plywood at Home Depot,  or have it assumed that they are endorsing the owner's views.   My plywood purchase money will also go to families of HD workers, who are one paycheck away from eviction,  and who (in this sparsely populated area) may have no current alternative places to work.   And this illustrates one of the points that the cancel culture critics are making in Harper's:  political issues can be complex and messy,  and a simplistic "you're either with us,  or you're a heartless creep" can miss nuances and motivations.  Another nuance:  everyone around here who has a home products business is pro-Trump,  and I have to patch that hole in my house somehow.

Here is an interesting counter-point to the Harpers letter.  Some of the signatories are expressing dismay about signing the letter.

It is a somewhat surprising list — mostly for the particular combination of names appearing on one list together, but also because every single one of them belongs to a writer, journalist or academic who boasts a prominent platform of some kind

To many people, it seems like there are motives underlying the letter that don't pertain to the fairly benign request for "open debate" — a theory supported by the fact that certain signatories want to redact their signatures because people they don't agree with also signed it. It seems that at least some of the signatories endorsed the letter in order to make a point in the personal battles they've been embroiled in on Twitter rather than to advocate for the freedom of expression for more marginalized voices.

Over the past few weeks, J.K. Rowling — yes, the author of the Harry Potter series; we wish there were another, better J.K. Rowling to talk about — has been increasingly vocal about her long-held views that gender is binary and the existence of trans women is an inherent threat to cisgender women. When the backlash predictably came, she took to her personal blog to explain her viewpoint in more detail, using unscientific and inaccurate information to bolster her arguments, and to bemoan the oppression she felt in voicing an unpopular opinion. Fact-checkers tore the blog apart, which contributed to her feeling oppressed and victimized by the response to her open transphobia.

Houston mayor cancels in-person GOP convention

I am sure that the governor will be thrilled.

But it's the right call.

Will Jacksonville FL follow his lead?

Sure, his business and econ during the pandemic have been better than the medical or preventative end, but... "shine" is an overstatement by any measure except the stock market.

What has been Trump's "business and econ" during the pandemic?  Congress spearheaded the COVID relief bills, which Trump went along with because he was told it would be good for his reelection chances.  He provided zero leadership on that, and provides zero leadership on continuing the higher unemployment payouts that probably single handedly saved us from falling into a depression but will now probably expire.  The small business relief programs have been a mess, and the responsibility for that is directly under his Administration.

The one signature Trump economic policy during the pandemic has been pushing for reopening.  And we know how that has worked out.

And largely due to Trump's stance, GOP leaders resisted calls for masks until July 1.

They really didnt.

Yup.

But it didn't hurt businesses as much as it hurt people.

And he did sign the bills that Congress passed.

Like I said, "shine" is only a relative term. "Was a little less light sucking" might have been a better phrase.

But maybe most of all, they're just unprepared, incompetent, too lazy and or uninterested in actually helping people in need, and really only about holding power for themselves and their special interests.

Thoughts like these are threatening the nation.  But we are quite strong enough to endure you, Kam

Peace.

You know what thoughts threaten a nation? The ones that excuse the mowing down people in cars.  That's who you are.

They really didnt.

Tried as they might Jim Jordan and Devin Nunes just couldn't slurp Trump's dick wearing masks.

Republican leadership on masks was non-existant.

The evil cowards have blood on their hands a lot of blood.

Kid you wouldn't answer my questions whether you wore a mask, unti McConnell signaled the deplorables a few days ago it was ok to mask up.
