He claimed that the generals said that, but nobody could identify any general who had said that.

Here's the quote:

Donald Trump was just asked whether he was “confident” the Lebanon explosion was “an attack and not an accident”.

He told reporters: “Well it would seem like it, based on the explosion.” The president added he had met with US generals and said they “seem to feel that it was”.

“They seem to think it was an attack. It was a bomb of some kind, yes,” he said.

The generals have said that that is not what they said.

Three US Defense Department officials tell CNN that as of Tuesday night there is no indication they have seen that the massive explosions that rocked the Lebanese capital of Beirut on Tuesday was an attack, as President Trump indicated during a question and answer session with reporters at the White House. 

The officials, who declined to be identified so they could speak freely, said they don’t know what the President is talking about. 

One official pointed out that if there were indications anyone in the region pulled something off of this scale, it would trigger automatic increases in force protection for US troops and assets in the region if for no other reason than worry about retribution attacks.

The official notes that none of that is happening so far at least.   

But Trump was having none of that:

“But whether it was a bomb intentionally set off -- it ended up being a bomb," he said. “But no, I’ve heard it both ways. It could have been an accident and it could have also been something that was very offensive.”

White House chief of staff Mark Meadows defended the president, saying Trump only told reporters on Tuesday what military officials had told him. “The president shared with the American people what he was briefed on, with 100% certainty I can tell you that," Meadows told CNN.

But U.S. officials on Wednesday couldn’t identify any “generals” who delivered any such Beirut message to the president. And while none would comment publicly, some noted that defense and intelligence officials didn't have enough information about the explosion to make any statement about the cause on Tuesday evening.
