Kid and Ward:

You regularly complain that too many deaths are attributed to COVID-19 when they should be something else, despite evidence that COVID-19 causes more total deaths than are attributed to it in the US.

Would you say this death was from (a) drowning, (b) seizure, or (c) COVID-19?

The Supreme Court on Monday formally refused to put on a fast track election challenges filed by President Donald Trump and his allies.

The court rejected pleas for quick consideration of cases involving the outcome in five states won by President-elect Joe Biden: Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin.

The orders, issued without comment, were unsurprising. The justices had previously taken no action in those cases in advance of last week's counting of the electoral votes in Congress, which confirmed Biden's victory.

The court still could act on appeals related to the Nov. 3 election later this winter or in the spring. Several justices had expressed interest in a Pennsylvania case involving the state Supreme Court's decision to extend the deadline for receipt of mailed ballots by three days, over the opposition of the Republican-controlled legislature.

But even if the court were to take up an election-related case, it probably wouldn't hear arguments until the fall.

https://news.yahoo.com/house-democrats-pushing-25th-amendment-154917024.html

Rep. Alex Mooney, R-W.Va., on Monday blocked Democrats from bringing up a resolution to urge Vice President Mike Pence to invoke the 25th Amendment to remove President Donald Trump from office.

Under House rules, it took only one lawmaker to block immediate consideration of the resolution aimed at pressuring Republicans to take power away from Trump.

Democrats can now bring it up for a vote on Tuesday as they move forward with a new article of impeachment.

The article, which charges Trump with inciting an insurrection, was officially introduced Monday.

It could be considered as early as Wednesday, according to Rhode Island Rep. David Cicilline, one of the authors.

While the article has no Republican cosponsors, Cicilline told reporters he's hopeful some will vote for it.

The 25th Amendment resolution that will be debated Tuesday calls on Pence and the cabinet to, within 24 hours, "declare what is obvious to a horrified Nation: That the President is unable to successfully discharge the duties and powers of his office."

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said Sunday that lawmakers must "act with urgency" because Trump is an imminent threat to both the Constitution and democracy.

"As the days go by, the horror of the ongoing assault on our democracy perpetrated by this President is intensified and so is the immediate need for action," she wrote in a letter to colleagues.

Mooney had been among the House Republicans who voted last week not to accept the state-certified election results showing Trump lost reelection.

Should the FBI be looking into Clarence Thomas and his wife, Ginny?

On Wednesday morning, Ginni Thomas—wife of Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas—endorsed the rally in Washington demanding that Congress overturn the election. She then sent her “LOVE” to the demonstrators, who violently overtook the Capitol several hours later. Two days later, Thomas amended her post with the addendum: “[Note: written before violence in US Capitol].” By that point, five people involved in the insurrection, including a Capitol Police officer, had died.

Thomas, a conservative lobbyist and zealous supporter of Donald Trump, has fervently defended the president over the last four years. On her Facebook page, she frequently promotes baseless conspiracy theories about a “coup” against Trump led by Jewish philanthropist George Soros, a frequent target of anti-Semitic hate. Thomas draws many of these theories from fringe corners of the internet, including an anti-vax Facebook group that claimed Bill Gates would use the COVID vaccine to kill people. In recent months, she also amplified unsubstantiated corruption claims against Joe Biden while insisting, falsely, that the Obama administration illegally spied on Trump’s 2016 campaign, then tried to rig the election against him.

In turn, Trump has rewarded Thomas with an extraordinary amount of access to the Oval Office. Her advocacy group Groundswell got an audience with the president in early 2019. According to the New York Times, the meeting was arranged after Clarence and Ginni Thomas had dinner with the Trumps. (Clarence Thomas and Trump appear to be quite friendly: The justice took his clerks to meet with the president in the Oval Office at least once; Ginni attended as well.) At the White House, Groundswell’s members lobbied Trump against transgender service in the military, which he already prohibited in 2017. The ban took effect in 2019, around the time of Groundswell’s meeting, after the Supreme Court lifted lower court orders blocking it by a 5–4 vote. (Clarence Thomas did not recuse himself from the case; he has never recused from any case because of his wife’s lobbying activities.) The New York Times also reported that Ginni Thomas compiled lists of federal employees whom she deemed insufficiently loyal to the president. She sent her lists to Trump, urging him to fire the disloyal employees, though he seems to have largely ignored her. He has, however, stacked his administration with former Thomas clerks.

Has the FBI interviewed her? If not, why not?

Just 7 million people have been vaccinated, so far. 22 million doses have been distributed.

Trump’s laser focus on vaccine distribution these past few weeks have really got the program off the ground at Warp Speed.

Of course republicans turn on government. They are always absolute failures at running government. They’d rather lash out than face their own massive inadequacy.

A bit more on Ginny Thomas in this. She was a very bad girl. A twenty year timeout and a long hard look into her husband and the viability of his continued role in American life are in order.

Re:  Parler.  Yes, Bellingcat is not the only archivist group out there, all helping to save evidence as well as pieces of history.  (though I expect a lot of it is banal, repetitive and one-note).

Parler hit back at Amazon on Monday, filing a lawsuit accusing the tech giant of violating antitrust law by cutting off the conservative-friendly social media site's presence on the web.

In a complaint filed in federal court in Washington state, Parler said Amazon’s decision was “motivated by political animus” and designed to reduce competition to the benefit of Twitter, which is also a customer of the online retailer's Amazon Web Services division.
