ROCK HILL, S.C. — A generational divide among black voters is persisting in the Democratic primary — between the two old white men.
Joe Biden has amassed a staggering lead among older African Americans, commanding nearly two-thirds support of black voters 65 and older in the most recent Morning Consult poll. Bernie Sanders is the favorite of black millennials, though his margin with that group is much smaller. Among all black voters, Biden is leading Sanders, 41 percent to 20 percent.

Biden has a staggering lead in the field right now with all voters, largely thanks to his name recognition. And I would bet good money that the “generational divide” between support for a progressive vs. more moderate candidate exists with white voters too.
As for anyone thinking there is one candidate who is “the only hope of beating Trump” as though Trump is some kind of political juggernaut (particularly with the coming economic slowdown) I’d say that thinking is flawed.
I am uncomfortable with anyone basing their choice on who can best beat Trump in the general. Yes, we are facing what could be considered an existential crisis in four more years of this “president” but it’s the gaming it out that can go wrong. You don’t think the US will elect a woman? OK. But given that Biden is gaffe-prone, has issues with interactions with women, and seems to have an indifferent attitude toward the truth (issues that matter to Democratic voters, anyway) it’s not impossible that down the road Biden becomes less “electable.” At the very least he draws less clear a contrast with the White House’s current occupant.
Plus, beating Trump isn’t only about the election. There will be a lot of work to do after its won, and it will take someone with energy and ideas to reverse the damage that has been done and ferret out the time-bombs left over by the equal parts incompetence and malice of the Trump Administration.
I hope that 2020, like 2018, is another election in which the GOP face a clear reckoning for their support of corruption and white nationalism, for their anti-democratic positioning, and for putting their party over their country. I think it will be. And I think any number of our current candidates can stand at the head of that storm, but Elizabeth Warren will do the best job of returning our government to its people.
